Hydrotherapy

St.Gabriel’s Hydrotherapy Pool Hydrotherapy is the use of water at an increased temperature for the maintenance of health, the treatment of disability to relieve pain and promote physical wellbeing. St Gabriels hydrotherapy pool opened in January 2009. Since then it has been of enormous benefit to the children that attend St Gabriels School and Centre and to the wider community. Although the initial focus was on making it available to the children who attend the services at St Gabriels, demand has meant that it is now open to outside disability groups. Hydrotherapy Pool Open Sessions Open sessions are available where individuals who have conditions such as low back pain, arthritis, stroke, post orthopaedic surgery, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s, or those on sports injury rehabilitation programmes can now access the hydrotherapy pool to perform independent rehabilitation. The pool is heated and maintained at a constant 32% temperature which is a much higher temperature than a regular pool. The higher water temperature helps to decrease muscle stiffness and pain thereby increasing a wider range of motion and allowing more effective rehabilitation. Hydrotherapy can also improve balance, motor skills, co-ordination, posture and gait and allows freedom of movement for wheelchair users when they are in the water. There are also a number of therapeutic jets in the pool that can help relieve muscle pain and aid muscle relaxation. Ease of Access The hydrotherapy pool is equipped with pool hoists, ceiling hoists in the changing rooms, shower chairs, shower beds and plinths. All areas are specially adapted to allow ease of movement for wheelchair users and people with decreased mobility.

Physiotherapy

THE ROLE OF THE PHYSIOTHERAPIST:

The physiotherapist aims to provide a timely and effective service to children
with delayed movement development, physical disability and problems based
on movement, balance and co-ordination.
The physiotherapist is concerned with developing your child’s ability to move and achieve motor milestones. The physiotherapist also helps with good posture and the use of muscles.

The physiotherapist will:

complete a formal physiotherapy assessment on your child
help with an orthotic assessment. An orthotic assessment assesses a child’s footwear to see if a child would benefit from splints/insoles or any other equipment that would help their posture or walking. It is carried out by an orthotist and the physiotherapist;
assess your child’s equipment needs (for example, standing frames, sleep
systems, sea_ng system).

Following this assessment the physiotherapist:
Will tell you if any equipment is recommended and, with your permission, they will apply to the HSE for funding for this equipment. If your child has a medical card or a long-term disability card, any recommended equipment may be funded by the HSE. If your child does not have one of these cards, you would have to pay for any equipment recommended yourself;
Offer advice on gross motor/postural programmes. These programmes identify activities aimed at helping a child’s gross motor function (large muscle movement)
Offer advice on overall developmental programmes
Help to run various group programmes throughout the year some of which might suit your child
Provide hydrotherapy (physiotherapy in a water pool) if it’s suitable for your child. This can help work on co-ordination, strength and good posture.

Occupational Therapy

Occupational Therapy Occupational Therapists work with children to assist them to develop “skills for the job of living”. In order to develop, promote and enhance your child’s skills the Occupational Therapist will assess a range of activities of daily living for example, self care (including dressing, feeding and toileting), productivity (play and education) and leisure (games and activities for enjoyment). These are assessed by identifying foundation skills affecting their performance which include: Sensory – How your child processes and organises sensory information from their body and environment e.g. reactions to touch, sound and movement. Motor – Your child’s muscle strength, posture, finger grasp, in-hand manipulation, visual motor coordination, gross motor co-ordination and balance. Cognitive – Your child’s ability to attend on a task, problem-solve, organise themselves and plan within their environment, transfer learned skills to new situations. Environmental: adaptations, accessibility to your child’s environment. Here in St.Gabriel’s Occupational Therapy intervention is carried out using a variety of approaches and is dependent on your child’s identified needs, for example: Group intervention, individual intervention or joint intervention with other members of the multidisciplinary team to develop functional skills as mentioned above. Education/information provision to parents and other relevant professionals involved in your child’s care. Home/school/pre-school visits to liaise with other relevant professionals involved in your child’s care Home and school programmes may be provided to complement treatment sessions. Specialist equipment recommendations may be provided for physical needs or sensory needs e.g. seating, toileting etc. Liaison with Specialist seating clinic occurs as necessary. Advice on Assistive Technology for education. Liasion with Specialist assistive technology services as necessary. Advice on environmental adaptations in the home & educating placements e.g. wheelchair accessibility with a building
